Merzedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg

Back in its fourth year Joburg Fashion Week will be taking place March 7 - 10 in Hyde Park. Having Mercedes-Benz as a sponsor means we can expect this to be a pretty glitzy fashion affair. Confirmed designers are Thula Sindi, Kluk CGDT, David Tlale, Wildfig, CSquared, Abigail Betz and many more.
Organised by Africa Fashion International click here for tickets and schedule information.

JLo and Cameron Diaz

Girls who did it right!!!

These two looked absolutly stunning. Especially Cameron, in my opinion. I was not very sure about how J Lo's dress looked like from the front but in this pic she looks amazing.

El Cubano Launch

sean kamati vakwetus own at the launch

Well, I do know that this is way overdue but due to technical difficulties and loss of equipment I had no chance to write an actually review about the launch of the much anticipated lounge El Cubano.

After having been closed for quite a while people where biting their nails, in anticipation of the grand opening of the newly located El cubano, which is now fabulously situated at the Hilton Hotel in the heart of the city centre..
We all drove by/walked by and gawked at the OPENING SOON poster and spoke amongst ourselves about how this place would eventually look like.

On the 10th of February 2012, us at Vakwetu got a special invite to the opening... the opening itself got lots of criticism because of the steep entrance prices, which no average Namibian citizen would be able to afford but by some miracle many did...

The launch party had three stages..
1. There was a ceremony with only the invited vip guest. this was to inaugurate the club and this was also the official opening, cutting of the ribbon by honourable Hage Geingob, who was amongst the dignitaries at the party.
2. Was the private VIP party on this inside of the place.. it was fabulously decorated.

3. Was the official party starter outside in the tent, where the people who paid n$500 got treated to performances by the likes of Stefan Ludik and other international artists..

Thereafter, people just partied the night away, with some getting quite scandalous but that is a secret known only to the attendees, so if you were not there you are just going to have to figure that out...

Oscars dresses: Meryl Streep

meryl streep in lanvin.Meryl Streep has been recruited by Livia Firth for the Green Carpet Challenge, and this dress was specially made by Lanvin in eco-certified fabric sourced by the GCC. Which is fabulous. Ideally, Streep should always wear white – it looks incredible with her beautiful skin (think of how good she looked with that snowy hair in The Devil Wears Prada), but this soft, gold comes a close second. However, although the draped top half is lovely, the bottom half looks like a bathtowel. Tailoring was invented for a reason. Use it

this is an example of a man getting the oscar look right...
stylish, sleek,simple and yet elegant.

guys please take note

please also this does not mean that one has to burst their budget to go out and look like this... take a look around. go bargain, vintage shopping... just because its Giorgio Armani does not mean that you will look good in it.. dress according to your body type... custom fitted suits are always best.

OSCARS

So lets be honest.... many of us were wide awake, drinking loads of coffee, snuggling up with a loved one all in the name of the oscars..
if you have no idea what the Oscars are, you have been living under a cave for the past 84 years... apart from it being the most prestigious film awards it is also one of the biggest gathering of fashionistas and fashionistos alike.

Lets not lie to ourselves.. we have all dreamt of having that fairytale moment. lets picture it for a moment.......

after months of trying to lose weight because Carolina Herrera told you that unless you lose those 5kgs there is no way you will be seen dead in one of her outfits, you finally reach the day and your dress tears at the fitting... well because you have tons of pros around you  dont panick.. fair enough.. on the ride down to the venue you down the free chapamge that they have for you in the car just to get a bit of that liquid confidence and knowing these bougie oscar people you are probably sipping on some Moet and Chandon.. happy times... this confidence is preparing you for the hounds of paparazzi and interviewers that are all going to ask you the exact same question "WHO ARE YOU WEARING?"   and naturally you put on that fake smile and gladly answer, hoping and praying that you dont let your team down by forgetting your designers name. after answering 500 of the same question and pray that Sascha Baron Cohen does not spill whatecer dust or sand he was carrying in that tin can on your dress because you are already on prbation for violent behaviour! " where is the alcohol?" is what is on your mind because you really have nothing to look forward to, as this year there were no nominations for you, SAD.

during the formalities you look around the room, downing that champers, clapping and laughing at the stupid jokes and secretly praying that Mila Jovovic trips and falls because that Ellie Saab dress is absolutely amazing on her....her and every other lady in the room... Viola davis looking stunning in green Vera wang and Michelle williams stealing the show in that amazing red Louis Vuitton couture..

atleast you are having fun.... but all that is on your mind is getting trashed and featuring hard taht the Vanity Fair afterparty.. there you hope to change into that slutty Gucci number and make out with one or more actual A-list celebs. being d list sucks at times.. Not even a scandal on the cover of People magazine..

after its all done, you eventually stumble home, you throw of your Christian Louboutins and fall onto your bed hoping that the next day some or other major director calls you in the morning, for a role that will hopefully get you nominated for the oscars next year, so that you could do this ALL OVER AGAIN......

ALL IN THE NAME OF FASHION!!!!!!

N'kya Designs now available in Accra!

N’kya Designs has officially launched itself in Ghana through the showcasing of two collections; Bedazzled and Dawn. Bedazzled is an existing collection which has been brought over from London and updated to fit the new surroundings. It will feature bold reds, blues and yellows as well as embellishments for maximum impact. Dawn is an entirely new collection, symbolizing a new phase or rebirth of N’kya Designs. Lace detailing is key to most pieces as well as the signature combination of wax print fabrics with other textures.

Sheila Boateng is the designer and businesswoman behind N’kya Designs. She launched the brand in 2007 in London but has always sourced materials from Ghana and now has finally made a permanent move back to the continent she loves and knows.

The event was a private showing, which took place at the Obuasi Suite of the Labadi Beach Hotel. The show commenced with a poetry reading which was later followed by a live performance by Songstress Bertha whiles the models sauntered down the catwalk wearing pieces from the Dawn collection. Selected pieces from both collections were auctioned off with the highest bid of the night 1000 Ghana Cedis on a chiffon top and African wax print skirt with lace ruffles down the center. There was also the sale of 4 dresses by an anonymous guest of the event and these were given to 4 lucky ladies that graced the stage to dance Azonto (a new ghanaian dance). This definitely made the night very entertaining!
