Celebrating their 105th anniversary the Swakara Fashion show was indeed a trip from the dusty desert farms of the south where the Swakara sheep are breed to the concrete jungle and catwalk.
This fabulous event took place on the 28th of june at the Jaguar, Rangerover and Novel Ford buildings in Windhoek an unusual but fitting venue it proved to be.
The actual fashion show took place in the Novel Ford workshop. How? The normally oily, dust infested, sweaty workshop was transformed into a runway unlike non ever seen before in Namibia.
The event was extremely well attended by the upper echelons of Namibian society including the guest of honour the president Hifikepunye Pohamba and other distinguished guests. Let us not forget the fashionistas and fashionistos who grabbed front row seats to to get a better look at the amazing creations that were on display on the runway. Also sitting pretty in the front row were us, the Vakwetu team, Editor in chief and to her right the fashion editor as well.
Lights. Camera. Action!
From the start of the show our eyes were glued to not only the stunning models but most importantly the clothes.. there were designs by the swakara team , Seelenbinder, Namibian young designers and Pambilii young designers. The event showcased not only the versatility of the swakara wool but also bags, accessories and designs by innovative up and coming Namibian designers. Hues of gold, caramel to browns dominated the runway with fabric mixtures of silks, cottons and beaded embellishments transformed into high waisted pants, cocktail dresses and evening gowns.
The Swakara Fashion show was also the culmination of the Young Designers Competion and the winner was announced during the evening. The timid yet beautiful young designer Aillie Nangula Eliphas came out on top having woed not only judges locally but abroad. His Excellency President Pohamba presented her with a award and as we were informed her winning design which is a high waisted skirt incorporating swakara wool.
All in all, it was an well planned and well executed show with an amazing turnout. It's a pity that we forgot to turn the camera on ourselves cause dolls we looked fabulous too!
